Achieving Excellence Beyond Belief
Sandy Upper School

Science

Science Department Plan of Action (School Closure)

Year 7

An independent project based on ecosystems – links to SoW and NC

This project consists of independent research. Students will be given a set of tasks to build up an idea of a habitat and will design an organism ideally suited to that environment over the course of a number of lessons.

Resources: Powerpoint and task lists

Teachers Allocated: Mrs Calvert and Miss Neesam

Year 8

An independent project based on the space topic links to NC and GCSE Physics.

Students will create a travel guide for visiting the different planets in the solar system. This will require students completing some research to learn the style required for their write up and then creating a guide for each planet and major moon, as well as other interesting areas to “visit”. Each place to “visit” will take, minimum, one lesson to complete.

Resources: Powerpoint and task lists

Teacher Allocated: Mr Walker and Mr Croft

Year 9 and Year 10

Students will complete set of lessons designed to build up a whole picture of ecosystem protection. This draws on areas from the biology, chemistry and physics courses (within the combined science specification) and will act as flipped learning opportunities for students to revise content when they reach it in the revised curriculum plan upon commencement of regular lessons again.

Outline

Lesson 1 & 2: Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy Resources
Lesson 3 & 4: Use of Materials
Lesson 5 & 6: Carbon Cycle
Lesson 7 & 8: Heat Transfer (particularly by Radiation)
Lesson 9 & 10: Greenhouse Effect
Lesson 11 & 12: Carbon Footprint
Lesson 13 & 14: Deforestation
Lesson 15 & 16: Loss of Biodiversity

Resources: Lesson Powerpoints and task lists Teachers Allocated: Mr Walker, Mr Calvert, Miss Neesam and Mr Croft

Year 11

Combined Science

Revision powerpoints and quiz questions uploaded regularly for students to complete revision for exams

Biology, Chemistry and Physics revision resources, quizzes, exam papers and mark schemes will be made available for students to complete.

Resources: Powerpoints, quizzes, exam questions, mark schemes

Teachers Allocated: Mr Calvert (Biology), Mr Croft (Chemistry), Mr Levesley (Physics)

Triple Science

Class teachers to set work for students based on work that is left to be completed before exams

All courses still have several lessons worth of content to be completed. This will be presented in a flipped learning style (assuming there is opportunity to cover work that was done after potential closure, and before exams). Students will have access to exam questions to be able to self-assess learning and MCF will post daily 10 mark, self-marked quizzes on Google Forms/Classroom for each subject in rotation.

Resources: Powerpoints, quizzes, exam questions, mark schemes

Teachers Allocated: Class Teachers: Mr Cuff (Biology), Mr Levesley and Miss Burke (Chemistry), Mrs Hinson (Physics)

A-level classes (same basic outline for Bio Chem and Phys)

Year 12 Biology, Chemistry and Physics: Class teachers to set work for students based on work that is left in first year specification and revision materials for students to complete in preparation for end of year assessments for year 12.

Year 12 Applied Science:

Year 13 Biology, Chemistry and Physics: Class teachers to set work for students based on work that is left to be completed before exams for year 13.

For content that is left to be taught, work uploaded to consolidate knowledge and apply a flipped classroom approach to any new content left to be taught.

Teachers need to be available via email/Google Classroom for y13 students to ask questions relevant to exams.

Any exam papers and mark schemes that can be uploaded will be, although all Y13 students have been given all available past papers in printed version before mocks.

Students that take Biology and Physics have had some introduction to Google Classroom, so opportunity for work to be set via Google Classroom for submission and review if needed (for example Y13 biology students completing practice essays, sending to Mr Cuff to mark).

Resources: Powerpoints, Task Lists, Exam Questions, Quiz Questions.
